Risk Factors, Complications and Prevention of Heart Disease

Heart disease increases the risk for someone to get struck with a cardiac arrest or heart attack. Keeping the heart in good shape can lower your risk for cardiac emergencies which can be life-threatening. Remember, many forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated with healthy lifestyle choices including eating a balanced and nutritious diet, regular physical activity, quitting smoking, etc.

It’s advisable that you equip yourself in the life-saving CPR procedure to be able to efficiently handle out-of-hospital cardiac emergencies. CPR comprises chest compressions and rescue breaths which maintains circulatory flow and oxygenation during cardiac arrest. Early appropriate resuscitation involving early appropriate defibrillation and appropriate implementation of post-cardiac arrest care can lead to improved survival and neurologic outcomes for cardiac arrest victims.
There are CPR courses for both healthcare and non-healthcare providers. Choose a certified training site for obtaining training such as the AHA certified CPR Indianapolis. Here’s some information on an ACLS class Indianapolis”:

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Classes- This American Heart Association program is for anyone working in an emergency or a critical care type environment, such as paramedics, critical care nurses, surgeons, emergency department staff, etc. Our AHA certified ACLS instructors are highly experienced, and most importantly extremely friendly and understanding.
The other courses for healthcare providers include Basic Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

Risk Factors:
Some of the risk factors for heart disease include
1.      Family History
2.      Age
3.      Smoking
4.      Diabetes
5.      High Blood Pressure
6.      High Blood Cholesterol
7.      Unhealthy Diet
8.      Physical Inactivity

Complications:
Heart Attack (myocardial infarction)- A blood clot blocking the blood flow through a blood vessel that feeds the ticker causes MI, which damages or destroys a part of the heart muscle. Atherosclerosis can cause this event.

Stroke- Ischemic stroke occurs when the arteries to the brain are narrowed or blocked which causes little blood to reach the brain. Remember, the same risk factors for cardiovascular disease can lead to a stroke. It is a medical emergency as brain tissue begins to die within just a few minutes of a stroke.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest- SCA is the sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness, often caused by an abnormal heart rhythm. If not treated immediately, it is life-threatening, resulting in sudden cardiac death.
The other complications include peripheral artery disease, aneurysm and heart failure.

Prevention Tips:
Heart disease types like heart defects can’t be prevented. But you can prevent many other types of the disease by making a few lifestyle changes like
1.      Maintaining a healthy weight
2.      Quitting smoking
3.      Controlling high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes
4.      Reducing and managing stress
5.      Regular physical activity at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week

The Mental Challenge of Administering Effective CPR

Understanding the Mental Challenge of Administering CPR Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) saves thousands of lives annually. However, the mental challenge of administering effective CPR often prevents bystanders from taking action. Despite widespread training availability, only 35% to 40% of cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR globally. This alarming statistic reveals that psychological barriers, not just a lack of knowledge, prevent life-saving interventions. The mental challenge of administering CPR extends beyond technical skills. It involves confronting fear, managing stress, and overcoming psychological hesitation in emergency situations. Understanding these challenges helps us prepare better responders and ultimately save more lives. What Are the Challenges of CPR? The Psychological Barriers Stress-Induced Performance Decline Emergency situations trigger intense stress responses that significantly impact CPR performance. High-stress environments activate the body...

AED Application During Two-Rescuer CPR: Best Practices

Introduction: Timing and Teamwork Save Lives When cardiac arrest strikes, every second counts. The seamless integration of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) application during two-rescuer CPR represents one of the most significant advancements in modern resuscitation science. Research demonstrates that for every minute defibrillation is delayed, survival rates decrease by 7-10%. Proper AED application combined with high-quality CPR can more than double a victim's chance of survival when compared to CPR alone. This comprehensive guide examines the critical relationship between AED application and two-rescuer CPR, providing healthcare professionals and trained responders with evidence-based protocols that optimize outcomes. From initial assessment to post-resuscitation care, understanding these best practices ensures rescuers can act with confidence and precision during life-threatening emergencies.
