Most cardiac arrests occur due to an abnormal heart rhythm that goes by the name Ventricular Fibrillation which can be fatal. A cardiac arrest victim would require immediate treatment for survival. The most appropriate treatment in this regard is proper application of the life-saving CPR procedures. Properly administering the CPR techniques- a series of chest compressions and rescue breaths in the ratio of 30:2- can revive the life of a victim involved in a cardiac emergency.
A good amount of training is what can make you well-prepared in the CPR procedures. If you are a resident of the Indianapolis region and looking to join a CPR course, sign up at the AHA certified CPR Indianapolis. Both theoretical and practical training are imparted to the students. There are courses for both healthcare and non-healthcare providers. Read to know more about a BLS class Indianapolis:
Basic Life Support Training Classes- This course is also known as BLS for Healthcare Providers, and is intended for nursing, medical, dental, physical and occupational therapy, radiology, pharmacy, EMT’s, etc. students and employees in healthcare fields. The course satisfies CPR requirements for all students in healthcare and medical related school programs, and all jobs in healthcare.
The course fee is $74. The fees are different for different programs.
Symptoms of VFib includes dizziness, nausea, chest pain, tachycardia, or accelerated heartbeat, and palpitations with the most common signs being sudden collapse or fainting, because the muscles and brain have stopped receiving blood from the heart.
Preventive Measures:
Medications and medical procedures may be recommended by physicians if the ventricular fibrillation results from scar tissue due to a heart attack, or some structural defect in the heart. This minimizes the risk of reoccurrence of VFib. The following may also be recommended:
Ventricular Tachycardia Ablation- This involves insertion of a catheter through a vein and threaded to the heart, to correct structural heart problems that cause an arrhythmia. Ablation destroys scars tissue that blocks electrical signals apart from clearing the signal pathway of electrical impulses in order for the ticker to beat normally again.
Medications- The most commonly used medicine to prevent sudden cardiac arrest or ventricular fibrillation is beta blockers that stabilizes the ticker’s electrical activity. Some examples are metoprolol, propranolol, timolol, and atenolol. Medications like Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are usually started after the conduction of a blood test in order to ensure that the kidneys are working properly before starting on this type of medication. Some examples in this regard are lisinopril, perindopril and ramipril. Amiodarone (Cordarone) or calcium channel blockers may also be prescribed.
Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)- These devices are placed in the body which has been designed to recognize certain types of arrhythmias, or abnormal heart rhythms, and correct them by emitting electric shocks to restore the heart’s normal rhythm.
Coronary Angioplasty- Surgery may be necessary in severe cases of coronary artery disease. Angioplasty is one such surgery that opens up the coronary artery.
Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)- The risk of Ventricular Fibrillation is reduced with this surgery which involves the damaged blood vessel being by-passed with grafts taken from blood vessels elsewhere in the body which allows blood to pass through into the heart muscle by effectively going around the artery’s blocked area.
