An abnormal
heart rhythm is when the ticker beats either too fast, slow, or irregularly
which is also referred to as an arrhythmia. Heart is the most vital organ in
the body which is a complex system of valves, nodes and chambers that control
how and when the blood is pumped. All of this are indicative of the fact that
the pattern in which the organ beats can change with the disruption and damage
of the functions of this vital system. Remember, not all arrhythmias are
life-threatening or cause health complications. There are shockable and
non-shockable rhythms.
Most cardiac
arrests occur due to an abnormal heart rhythm that goes by the name of
ventricular fibrillation. A victim would require immediate treatment for
survival with the most appropriate treatment being proper application of the
life-saving CPR techniques. The procedures comprise chest compressions and rescue
breaths. Proper application can revive the life of a victim involved in a
cardiac emergency. Always select an accredited training center for acquiring
training such as the AHA certified CPR Indianapolis. Certified instructors
conduct the classes through a series of audio and video lectures and hands-on
practice. There are courses for both healthcare and non-healthcare providers.

Types of Arrhythmias:
Ventricular Fibrillation- This type of abnormal rhythm can
stop the ticker from beating and cause cardiac arrest. It occurs in the
ventricles, where blood is not able to pump out of the heart to the body and
brain, due to the irregular heartbeat. Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a
serious condition that may cause death if it’s not immediately treated.
Tachycardia- Tachycardia means that the organ is
beating too fast. The three subtypes of tachycardia include Supraventricular
tachycardia, Ventricular tachycardia and Sinus tachycardia.
Bradycardia- Bradycardia means one has a slow ticker
rate which generally occurs when the electrical signals traveling from the
atria to the ventricles become disrupted.
Atrial Fibrillation- AFib causes the heart rate to
increase and become erratic. It can elevate the rate to 100 to 200 BPM, which
is a lot faster than the normal 60 to 100 BPM. It is the most common arrhythmia
which generally occurs in the organ’s upper chambers.
Atrial Flutter- This often causes a fast heart
rate, but it’s a more regular rhythm and typically occurs in the right atrium,
which is one of the two upper chambers of the organ.
Symptoms of Arrhythmias:
Some of the
symptoms include:
1. feeling faint, dizzy, or light-headed
2. shortness of breath
3. irregular pulse or heart palpitations
4. chest pain
5. pale skin
6. sweating
Causes of Arrhythmias include:
Coronary Artery Disease- Coronary arteries blockage due to
cholesterol and other deposits causes this serious problem.
Medications- Some medications can cause the ticker
rate to change which include caffeine, amphetamines, which are drugs that
stimulate the brain and beta-blockers, which are used to reduce high blood
pressure.
Some of the other causes include
1. changes in the heart’s muscle after
illness or injury
2. healing after ticker surgery
3. low potassium and other electrolytes
4. organ abnormalities
5. other health conditions
Risks of Arrhythmia include
2. previous ticker conditions, or a family history of conditions
3. diabetes
4. stress
5. being overweight
6. a sedentary lifestyle
7. a diet high in fats, cholesterol, and other unhealthy foods
8. high blood pressure or other health problems
9. excessive use of alcohol (more than two drinks per day)
10. drug abuse
11. sleep apnea
